The Student Counseling Service is committed to excellence in the treatment of mental health concerns in the Miami community through primary prevention, mental health education, and advocacy.

Overview

Our staff of highly qualified psychologists and psychologists-in-training is active in the community, offering consultation and outreach services to Miami University residence halls, student organizations, committees, faculty and staff and administrative offices. We are committed to prevention as the most ideal form of intervention. In addition to providing individual and group psychotherapy to full-time students at Miami University’s Oxford campus, the staff at the Student Counseling Service (SCS) is fully committed to providing quality consultation and programming to enhance understanding of issues of campus mental health and wellbeing.

The staff provides a range of psychoeducational programs to the faculty, staff, and students of Miami University each year. Some commonly requested programs include:

  • Stress reduction and anxiety management.
  • Meditation and guided visualization.
  • Providing difficult news or feedback to others.
  • Managing relationships with “difficult people.”
  • Coping with homesickness, depression, and loneliness.
  • Managing long-distance romantic relationships.
  • Cultural adjustment and dealing with oppression and racism on campus.
  • Sexual Assault and Interpersonal Violence: psychoeducation, prevention, and response to critical incidents in the halls.
  • Team identity and growth for athletes and others in campus organizations.
  • Suicide prevention and mental health gatekeeper trainings including Campus Assistance Programs (CAP), QPR (Question Persuade & Refer), and Mental Health First Aid for faculty and staff to teach how to identify, intervene with, and refer students with psychological concerns.
