The Miami University Police Department (MUPD) has resources available on its website for active shooter emergency procedures. 

The videos break down critical information into an easily digestible format, officer Nelda Mattison said.

“We want to provide our faculty, staff, and students with the resources and tools to be as prepared and safe as possible,” Mattison said. “We also want to provide peace of mind by knowing which tools to use at the right time.”

The videos run 6-10 minutes in length and are provided by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, and Ready Houston.

The MUPD site provides safety tips and resources for an active shooter emergency, as well as for other emergency situations. The Rave Guardian Safety App  is available to members of the university community at no cost for Android and iOS smartphones through the MUPD. 

Miami also utilizes the Omnilert emergency messaging system, which alerts the university community in the event of a situation that poses immediate danger or the closing of the entire campus.

MUPD Captain Jim Bechtolt said students, faculty, and staff can sign up for Nixle, the community notification system used by the Oxford Police Department.

“The MUPD also provides police officer facilitated safety programming to the university community,” Bechtolt said. “Topics for this programming include workplace violence, active threat/shooter response, and sexual assault awareness.”

Captain Andy Rosenberger noted MUPD put out a video in 2016 regarding active shooter emergencies, prior to the availability of the current situational videos.

“We hope these videos help to enable an engaging training program,” Mattison said.
