Research shows there are benefits of second language learning that exceed a student’s own linguistic abilities. Second language learning provides cognitive benefits that help to support academic achievement and improve beliefs about other cultures. Miami offers 5 K-12 licensure programs: Chinese, French, German, Latin, and Spanish.
Curriculum and Courses
As part of this program, you will complete at least 34 semester hours above the 202 level in Latin. A few of the other courses you will take in this major include:Teacher Candidates complete language and culture courses in the College of Arts and sciences including at least 34 semester hours above the 202 level in Latin. For the education portion of the degree, we utilize a cohort-based approach to teaching methods and pedagogy for each language taught in the department. We offer two teaching methods courses to instruct teacher candidates on effective language teaching strategies in their respective fields of study. A few other courses you will take in this major include:As part of this program, you will complete at least 34 semester hours above the 202 level in Latin. - CLS 102 Roman Civilization
- EDP 201 Human Development and Learning in Social and Educational Contexts
- EDP 301A Assessment and Evaluation in Educational Settings
- TCE 421A Classroom Cultures, Community, and Climate
- TCE 446L Reading in the Foreign Language
Although recommended, study abroad is not required in Latin education.
